Snack Wrapper Picnic Tote Rural Bangladeshi artisans use traditional basket-weaving techniques to create a picnic tote from recycled post-consumer snack bags and candy wrappers. Artisans purchase the bags and wrappers in bulk from recyclers who gather them throughout Bangladesh. One group of artisans washes the wrappers with water and detergent, and wipes them dry with clean rags. A second group wraps the papers around thin bamboo strips, which are then used to weave this bag.
”The idea came to our mind to use recycled materials because they are environment friendly,” said Suraiya Chowdury, Prokritee designer. “Fair trade buyers such as Ten Thousand Villages shared information with us about the trend of recycled materials. Chips packets are also a big problem for keeping our environment clean; they block our drainage systems.
